ABDOMEN

If you are scheduled for an ultrasound of the abdomen you must have a fat free diet beginning 12 hours prior to your exam. You may have nothing to eat or drink (except water with your daily medication) 8 hours prior to your test. The test includes ultrasound of your liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas, billary tree, part of your IVC and part of your aorta. This exam takes approximately 90 minutes.

UPPER ABDOMEN

If you are scheduled for an upper abdomen ultrasound  you must have a fat free diet beginning 12 hours prior to your exam. You may have nothing to eat or drink (except water and medicine) 8 hours prior to your scheduled exam. This ultrasound includes the gallbladder, liver, pancreas, and billary tree. This test takes approximately 45 minutes.

KIDNEY & BLADDER (Urinary)

If you are scheduled for an ultrasound of your kidney with bladder you may not eat or drink (except water with your daily medicine)  8 hours prior to your exam. You must drink 5-6 glasses (40 ounces) of water 45 minutes prior to your exam. You will not be able to empty your bladder until after the exam which  lasts approximately 45 minutes.

PELVIC

If you are scheduled for an ultrasound of the pelvic part of your abdomen you must drink 5-6 glasses (40 ounces) of water 45 minutes prior to your exam. You will not be able to empty your bladder until after the exam which  lasts approximately 45 minutes.

OTHER ULTRASOUND TESTING 

If you are scheduled for the thyroid or testicles, there is no preparation for this exam which lasts approximately 45 minutes.
